Stunning Deserts: Must-See Sandscapes

Exploring the World’s Most Beautiful Deserts

As a travel writer, I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some of the most breathtaking places on earth. From lush rainforests to towering mountains, every landscape has its own unique beauty. But there’s something truly special about deserts – the vast expanse of sand, the striking rock formations, and the dazzling sunsets that paint the sky in shades of orange and pink.

If you’re a nature lover like me, then you’ll definitely want to add these stunning deserts to your travel bucket list.

The Sahara Desert, Morocco

My first desert experience was in the Sahara desert, and it completely blew me away. Located in North Africa, the Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, covering over 3.6 million square miles. It’s a place of extremes – scorching hot during the day and freezing cold at night.

I highly recommend taking a camel trek through the Sahara to fully immerse yourself in its beauty. As I rode on the back of my camel, I couldn’t help but feel like I was in a scene from a movie. The golden sand dunes stretched out as far as the eye could see, and the silence was only broken by the occasional sound of my camel’s hooves.

For an unforgettable experience, I also recommend spending a night in a traditional Berber camp in the desert. As I lay on a blanket under the stars, surrounded by the peacefulness of the Sahara, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is a desert in southern Jordan. It’s a place of surreal beauty, with towering sandstone cliffs and vast sandy valleys. This desert was made famous by the film Lawrence of Arabia, and it’s not hard to see why.

One of the best ways to explore Wadi Rum is by booking a Jeep tour with a local Bedouin guide. They’ll take you through the desert, stopping at various viewpoints and sharing stories about the history and culture of the area. I was also lucky enough to witness a stunning sunset over the desert, which is a must-see for any visitor.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also spend a night camping in the desert. I highly recommend it – there’s nothing quite like falling asleep under a blanket of stars in the middle of the desert.

The Namib Desert, Namibia

The Namib Desert in Namibia is one of the oldest and driest deserts in the world. It’s also home to some of the most stunning landscapes I’ve ever seen. The red sand dunes, contrasted against the blue sky, make for a photographer’s dream.

One of the highlights of my trip to the Namib Desert was a visit to Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan surrounded by towering sand dunes. I climbed to the top of Dune 45, one of the most famous dunes in the area, and was rewarded with a breathtaking view of the desert below. It’s a challenging climb, but definitely worth it.

For a unique experience, I also recommend taking a hot air balloon ride over the Namib Desert. Seeing the sunrise over the desert from above is an unforgettable experience.

The Atacama Desert, Chile

Located in northern Chile, the Atacama Desert is the driest non-polar desert in the world. It’s also one of the most stunning, with its otherworldly landscapes and vibrant colors.

One of the highlights of my trip to the Atacama Desert was visiting the Valley of the Moon. This lunar-like landscape is filled with salt formations, sand dunes, and rock formations that have been carved by the wind and rain over thousands of years. It’s a place that truly makes you feel like you’re on a different planet.

I also recommend taking a tour to El Tatio, the third-largest geyser field in the world. Watching the geysers erupt at sunrise is a truly magical experience.

The Great Sand Sea, Egypt

Last but certainly not least is the Great Sand Sea in Egypt. Located in the western part of the country, this vast desert is home to some of the largest sand dunes in the world.

One of the highlights of my trip to the Great Sand Sea was visiting the Siwa Oasis. This lush green oasis is surrounded by the golden sand dunes of the desert, creating a stunning contrast. I also recommend taking a dip in the natural hot springs, which are said to have healing properties.

Another must-see in the Great Sand Sea is the White Desert, a surreal landscape filled with striking white rock formations that have been sculpted by the wind. It’s like walking through a fairytale
