My favourite places to visit in Frankfurt

Welcome to My Favourite Places in Frankfurt!

As a travel writer, I have had the opportunity to visit many cities around the world. But there is one city that has captured my heart and never fails to amaze me – Frankfurt. Located in the heart of Germany, this bustling metropolis is known for its beautiful skyline, rich history, and vibrant culture. In this blog post, I am excited to share with you my favourite places to visit in Frankfurt. So, let’s get started!

The Römerberg

No trip to Frankfurt is complete without a visit to the Römerberg, the historic heart of the city. This charming square is lined with colourful half-timbered houses, giving it a fairytale-like feel. It is also home to the famous Römer, the medieval town hall which has been standing since the 15th century. I highly recommend taking a guided walking tour of the Römerberg to learn about its history and take in the stunning architecture. And don’t forget to stop by the Römerberg Christmas Market during the holiday season – it is truly magical!

Frankfurt Cathedral

Just a short walk from the Römerberg, you will find the Frankfurt Cathedral, also known as Kaiserdom. This magnificent cathedral is one of the most important religious buildings in Germany, with a history dating back over 1,000 years. Take a guided tour inside to admire the stunning Gothic architecture and learn about the cathedral’s role in the city’s history. And if you’re feeling adventurous, climb the 328 stairs to the top of the tower for breathtaking views of Frankfurt.

Main Tower

For the best views of Frankfurt’s skyline, head to the Main Tower. Standing at 200 meters tall, this is the fourth tallest building in the city and offers a 360-degree observation deck. I highly recommend visiting at sunset to see the city lights come to life. And if you’re feeling hungry, head to the tower’s restaurant for some delicious German cuisine with a view.

Sachsenhausen

Cross the Main River and you will find yourself in the charming district of Sachsenhausen. This area is known for its traditional cider taverns, where you can try the famous Apfelwein (apple wine) and enjoy some hearty German food. I highly recommend visiting one of the taverns in the evening for a fun and lively atmosphere. And if you’re looking for a unique souvenir, stop by the Apfelwein Wagner shop to purchase a traditional Bembel, a ceramic jug used to serve Apfelwein.

The Palm Garden

If you’re in need of some greenery and relaxation, head to the Palm Garden. This beautiful botanical garden is home to over 13,000 plant species from all over the world. Take a stroll through the gardens and admire the stunning flowers, trees, and water features. And if you’re visiting in the summer, don’t miss the Palmengarten Sommerfest, a summer festival with live music, food, and drinks.

The Zeil

For all the shopaholics out there, the Zeil is a must-visit spot in Frankfurt. This bustling shopping street is lined with both high-end and affordable stores, making it the perfect place to indulge in some retail therapy. You will also find a variety of restaurants and cafes along the Zeil, making it a great spot for a break in between shopping.

The Museumsufer

Frankfurt is known as the cultural hub of Germany, and the Museumsufer is the perfect place to experience it. This area along the Main River is home to over 20 museums, showcasing everything from art and history to science and film. My personal favourite is the Städel Museum, which houses an impressive collection of European art from the 14th century to the present. And if you’re visiting in August, don’t miss the Museumsuferfest, a three-day festival with live music, food, and performances.

Final Thoughts

Frankfurt may be known as a business and financial hub, but it has so much more to offer. From its charming old town to its modern skyscrapers, this city has a unique blend of old and new.
