A food lover’s guide to Hanoi

A Food Lover’s Guide to Hanoi

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I’ve traveled to many destinations in search of the best and most authentic cuisine. But nothing has compared to the culinary experiences I had in Hanoi, Vietnam. From savory street food to upscale dining, this vibrant city has something to satisfy every food lover’s palate. So if you’re planning a trip to Hanoi, here’s my guide to experiencing the city’s delicious food scene.

The Street Food Scene

One of the best ways to truly immerse yourself in Hanoi’s food culture is by trying the street food. The city is known for its bustling and vibrant street food scene, with vendors selling a variety of dishes on every corner. From banh mi sandwiches to pho noodle soup, you’ll find an array of dishes that are full of flavor and won’t break the bank.

One of my favorite street food experiences in Hanoi was trying bánh cuốn, a dish made of steamed rice rolls filled with savory meat and topped with crispy fried shallots. I stumbled upon a small street vendor in the Old Quarter and was blown away by the delicious flavors of this dish. Don’t be afraid to try something new and unknown, you never know what hidden gem you might discover.

Traditional Vietnamese Dishes

Vietnamese cuisine is all about balance and harmony, with a focus on fresh herbs and ingredients. And Hanoi is the perfect place to try some of the country’s most famous dishes. Don’t leave the city without trying pho, a flavorful noodle soup made with a rich broth, tender meat, and fresh herbs. You can find this dish at almost every corner in Hanoi, but I highly recommend trying it at Pho 10 restaurant, a local favorite.

Another must-try dish is bun cha, a combination of grilled pork, rice noodles, and herbs served with a side of dipping sauce. This dish is a staple in Hanoi and is best enjoyed at Bun Cha Ta restaurant, a popular spot among locals and tourists alike.

Upscale Dining

If you’re looking for a more upscale dining experience, Hanoi also has a variety of options to choose from. One of my favorites is Cau Go restaurant, located in the heart of the city with stunning views of Hoan Kiem Lake. The menu offers a modern twist on traditional Vietnamese dishes, and the rooftop terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a romantic dinner while taking in the city’s skyline.

For a taste of French-influenced Vietnamese cuisine, head to La Verticale restaurant, where Chef Didier Corlou’s creativity and passion for food shines through in every dish. The elegant atmosphere and impeccable service make it the perfect spot for a special occasion.

Exploring the Markets

No food lover’s guide to Hanoi would be complete without mentioning the city’s bustling markets. These lively and colorful markets are not only a great place to find fresh produce and ingredients, but also a great opportunity to sample some of Hanoi’s most popular snacks and street food.

The Dong Xuan Market market is the largest indoor market in Hanoi and is a must-visit for any food lover. Here you can find a variety of local specialties such as dried fruits, spices, and even live seafood. Don’t forget to bargain for the best prices!

Unique Food Experiences

For a truly unique food experience in Hanoi, I highly recommend trying egg coffee. Yes, you read that right, egg coffee! This popular drink is made with whipped egg yolks, condensed milk, and coffee, creating a sweet and creamy concoction that is surprisingly delicious. Head to Cafe Giang cafe, where it was invented in the 1950s, for the best
