Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a city that holds a special place in my heart. From the charming cobblestone streets to the stunning views of the Tagus River, Lisbon is a city that has something to offer every type of traveler. I have been lucky enough to visit this beautiful city multiple times and each time I discover something new. In this blog post, I want to share with you my favourite places to visit in Lisbon. The Alfama district is the oldest and most charming neighborhood in Lisbon. It is a maze of narrow streets, colorful buildings, and traditional Portuguese restaurants. As you wander through the cobblestone streets, you will come across hidden gems such as local cafes and street art. One of my favorite spots in Alfama is the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, a terrace that offers breathtaking views of the city. I recommend getting lost in Alfama and taking in the authentic Lisbon atmosphere.
2. Belem – A Historical Treasure
Belem is a must-visit for history buffs. This neighborhood is home to some of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, including the Jeronimos Monastery and Belem Tower. The Jeronimos Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its stunning Gothic architecture. Belem Tower, on the other hand, is a 16th-century fortress that stands tall on the banks of the Tagus River. Make sure to also try the famous Pastel de Nata, a delicious custard tart that originated in Belem.
3. Bairro Alto – The Vibrant Nightlife
If you’re looking for a lively and energetic atmosphere, head to Bairro Alto. This neighborhood comes to life at night with its numerous bars, restaurants, and live music venues. It’s the perfect place to indulge in some delicious Portuguese food and drinks while mingling with locals and fellow travelers. I highly recommend trying a traditional Fado performance, a genre of music that is unique to Portugal.
4. Chiado – The Shopping Paradise
Chiado is the perfect place to satisfy your inner shopaholic. This elegant neighborhood is filled with designer boutiques, international brands, and local shops. It’s also home to the famous Bertrand Bookstore, the oldest bookstore in the world. Take a break from shopping and visit the charming Praça do Camões, a square where locals gather to socialize and have a drink.
5. LX Factory – A Quirky Hub of Creativity
LX Factory is a former industrial complex turned creative hub. This unique space is home to art galleries, design shops, and trendy restaurants. It’s a great place to explore and discover the work of local artists and designers. Don’t forget to stop by the Ler Devagar bookstore, which has a bicycle hanging from the ceiling!
6. Sintra – A Fairytale Escape
Located just 30 minutes from Lisbon, Sintra is a fairytale-like town that is a must-visit. This charming town is filled with stunning palaces, lush gardens, and breathtaking views. I highly recommend visiting the Pena Palace, a colorful palace that sits atop a hill and offers panoramic views of Sintra. Don’t forget to also try the famous Queijadas de Sintra, a traditional pastry made with cheese and cinnamon.
7. Cascais – A Beach Paradise
For a break from the city, head to Cascais, a coastal town just 30 minutes from Lisbon. This charming town is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning cliffs, and quaint streets. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak up some sun. I recommend taking a stroll along the promenade and trying some fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants overlooking the beach.
