How to spend a weekend in Antalya

Welcome to Antalya: My Guide to a Perfect Weekend Getaway

Antalya, the stunning coastal city in Turkey, has always held a special place in my heart. The crystal clear waters, the warm Mediterranean climate, and the rich history and culture make it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure-filled trip, Antalya has something for everyone. So pack your bags and join me as I take you through my personal guide on how to spend a weekend in Antalya.

Day 1: Explore the Old Town

The Old Town, also known as Kaleici, is a must-visit for any traveler in Antalya. Its narrow, cobblestoned streets lined with colorful Ottoman houses and boutique shops will transport you back in time. Start your day with a traditional Turkish breakfast at one of the many charming cafes in the area. I highly recommend trying the menemen, a delicious dish made with scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and peppers.

After breakfast, take a stroll through the streets and admire the beautiful architecture. Make sure to visit the iconic Hadrian’s Gate, a Roman triumphal arch that dates back to the 2nd century. You can also find many souvenir shops here, perfect for picking up some gifts for your loved ones back home.

For history buffs, a visit to the Antalya Museum is a must. It houses an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits from various civilizations that have inhabited the region over the centuries. The museum is located just outside the Old Town and can be easily reached by public transportation.

In the evening, head to the Old Harbor and take a relaxing boat tour around the bay. You’ll get to see the stunning views of the city from the water and also catch a glimpse of the famous Duden Waterfalls. End your day with a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants in the harbor, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and Turkish delicacies while watching the sunset.

Day 2: Beach Day and Adventure

Antalya is famous for its picturesque beaches, and no trip is complete without spending a day soaking up the sun and enjoying the crystal clear waters. Lara Beach and Konyaalti Beach are two of the most popular beaches in the city, and both offer a variety of activities such as parasailing, jet skiing, and banana boat rides.

After a morning at the beach, head to the nearby Antalya Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. It is home to over 200 species of marine life, and you can even swim with sharks if you’re feeling adventurous.

If you’re a thrill-seeker, I highly recommend taking a trip to the Taurus Mountains and going on a jeep safari. You’ll get to explore the rugged terrain, visit traditional villages, and even go swimming in natural pools. It’s an experience you won’t forget.

In the evening, head to the Duden Waterfalls, a series of cascading waterfalls that are simply breathtaking. You can take a scenic walk along the waterfalls or relax at one of the cafes nearby and enjoy the view.

Day 3: Day Trip to Perge and Aspendos

On your last day in Antalya, take a day trip to the ancient cities of Perge and Aspendos. Perge, located just 18 kilometers from the city, was once a prosperous Roman city and is now an impressive archaeological site. You can explore the ruins of the city, including the ancient theater, stadium, and agora.

Aspendos, located about 40 kilometers from Antalya, is home to one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world. It is still used for concerts and performances today, and I highly recommend catching a show if you have the chance.

After a day of exploring, head back to the city and treat yourself to a traditional Turkish bath, known as a hammam. It’s the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate before your journey back home.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Antalya has so much to offer, and a weekend is just enough time to get a taste of this beautiful city. From its rich history and culture to its stunning beaches and adventures, there’s something for everyone in Antalya. I hope my guide has inspired you to plan your next weekend getaway to this charming Mediterranean city.
