Exploring Amsterdam the Eco-Friendly Way: A How-To Guide
Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, is known for its beautiful canals, rich history, and vibrant culture. But did you know that it is also one of the most eco-friendly cities in the world? From renewable energy to sustainable transportation, Amsterdam has been leading the way in environmental initiatives. As a travel writer and an eco-conscious individual, I was excited to explore this city and share my tips on how to have an eco-friendly exploration in Amsterdam. Here’s a how-to guide for you to follow:
Choose Eco-Friendly Accommodations
When planning your trip to Amsterdam, consider staying in eco-friendly accommodations. There are many options available, from eco-hotels to sustainable hostels. These accommodations prioritize environmentally-friendly practices such as using renewable energy, reducing water consumption, and promoting recycling. One of my favorite eco-hotels in Amsterdam is Conscious Hotel Westerpark. Not only does it have a sustainable design, but it also offers organic and locally-sourced food in its restaurant.
Explore the City by Bike
Amsterdam is known as the “bicycle capital of the world” and for a good reason. With over 800,000 bikes in the city, cycling is the most common mode of transportation here. Renting a bike is not only a fun and convenient way to explore the city, but it is also eco-friendly. You can easily rent a bike from various rental shops, or even better, use the OV-fiets (public transport bike) system, which is available at train stations and popular tourist spots.
Visit Sustainable Markets
Amsterdam is home to several sustainable markets where you can find locally-grown produce and eco-friendly products. One of the most popular markets is the Boerenmarkt (farmer’s market) which takes place every Saturday at the Noordermarkt. Here, you can purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and other organic products directly from local farmers. You can also find handmade and sustainable goods at the Neighbourfood Market held every Sunday at the Westergasfabriek.
Take a Sustainable Canal Tour
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a canal tour. But instead of taking a traditional tour, opt for a sustainable one. Companies like Rederij Paping and Friendship Amsterdam offer electric boat tours, which are powered by solar panels and emit zero emissions. Not only will you get to enjoy the beauty of the canals, but you’ll also be reducing your carbon footprint.
Eat at Sustainable Restaurants
Amsterdam is a foodie’s paradise, and there is no shortage of sustainable restaurants in the city. These restaurants use locally-sourced and organic ingredients, and some even have their own urban gardens. One of my favorite sustainable restaurants is De Culinaire Werkplaats, where they create artistic and delicious dishes from seasonal produce.
Participate in Clean-Up Initiatives
As travelers, it’s our responsibility to leave a destination better than we found it. Consider joining clean-up initiatives while exploring Amsterdam. One organization that organizes clean-up events is Plastic Soup Foundation, which aims to reduce plastic pollution in the city’s canals. You can also participate in the Urban Green Fair, an event that promotes sustainability and green living in Amsterdam.
Use Public Transportation
If biking is not your thing, don’t worry, Amsterdam has an excellent public transportation system. The trams, buses, and metro run on electricity, making them a greener option than taxis or rental cars. You can purchase a public transport chip card for easy and convenient access to all modes of public transportation.
