As a travel writer, I have had the opportunity to visit many beautiful places around the world. But there is something truly special about Siem Reap, Cambodia. Most people come here to see the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat, but there is so much more to discover in this charming city. Getting to Know Siem Reap
Siem Reap is a small city located in the northwestern part of Cambodia. It is the gateway to the famous Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts millions of visitors every year. But beyond the temples, Siem Reap has a rich culture, delicious food, and warm and welcoming people. As soon as I arrived, I knew that this was a place that I would fall in love with.
Discovering the Local Culture
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the local culture is by visiting the markets. The Old Market, also known as Phsar Chas, is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the authentic Cambodian way of life. Here, you will find everything from fresh produce to souvenirs, and you can even try some delicious street food. Another popular market is the Night Market, where you can haggle for unique items and enjoy live performances by local musicians.
For a more in-depth understanding of Cambodian culture, I highly recommend a visit to the Cambodian Cultural Village. This open-air museum showcases the country’s history, traditions, and customs through traditional dance performances, handicraft demonstrations, and replicas of important landmarks.
Foodie Heaven
If you love food as much as I do, then Siem Reap will not disappoint. The local cuisine is a fusion of Khmer, Chinese, and French influences, making it a unique and delicious experience. Be sure to try some of the iconic dishes such as amok, a fragrant fish curry, and lok lak, a stir-fry beef dish served with a tangy sauce.
For a more hands-on experience, I recommend taking a cooking class. Not only will you get to taste some amazing dishes, but you will also learn how to cook them yourself. I took a class at the popular cooking school, Beyond Unique Escapes, and it was one of the highlights of my trip.
Hidden Gems of Siem Reap
While the temples of Angkor Wat are undoubtedly breathtaking, there are other lesser-known sites that are equally impressive. One of my favorites is the Beng Mealea temple, located about an hour’s drive from the city. This sprawling temple complex is surrounded by jungle, giving it a mysterious and ancient feel. If you’re up for an adventure, I also recommend visiting the Kulen Mountain Waterfall. This hidden gem is a bit of a hike, but the stunning views and refreshing swim at the end are well worth it.
Another must-visit spot is the Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Here, you can take a boat tour to explore the floating villages and learn about the daily lives of the locals who call this place home.
Giving Back to the Community
One of the things that stood out to me about Siem Reap was the strong sense of community and the efforts to give back to those in need. One way to support the local community is by visiting the workshops and social enterprises run by NGOs, such as Artisans Angkor and the Landmine Museum. These organizations provide employment opportunities and education to disadvantaged individuals, and their products are beautifully crafted and make for meaningful souvenirs.
